How big will your puppy get?

Puppies reach a predictable share of their adult weight at each age — and that share depends on how big they will end up. Enter what yours weighs now.

How the estimate works

Puppies reach a fairly consistent proportion of their adult weight at a given age — and that proportion depends on how big they will eventually be. A toy breed is half-grown at twelve weeks. A Great Dane at twelve weeks is under a third of its adult weight, because it has another year and a half of growing to do.

So the calculation is a division: your puppy's weight today, divided by the fraction of adult weight typical for that age and size class. The range shown either side of it widens for younger puppies, because that is where the uncertainty genuinely is.

What matters more than the number

Body condition beats weight. A puppy that is growing well has ribs you can feel easily under a thin layer of cover, and a visible waist when you look down at it. That is true whatever the scale says.

Faster is not better, especially for large breeds. Pushing growth with extra food raises the risk of developmental joint problems in big dogs. Large-breed puppy foods are formulated with controlled calcium and energy for exactly this reason.

Growth is not smooth. Puppies grow in bursts, often alongside a few days of extra sleeping and eating. A flat fortnight followed by a jump is normal.

Common questions

How accurate is a puppy weight calculator?

Accurate enough to buy a crate, not accurate enough to argue with. For a purebred puppy past four months the estimate is usually within about 10%. Under twelve weeks it is rough — at that age a puppy is only a fifth to a third of its adult weight, so a small error now multiplies. For mixed breeds of unknown parentage it is a guess, though usually a better one than eyeballing it.

When do puppies stop growing?

It depends almost entirely on size. Toy breeds are finished around nine or ten months. Small and medium breeds are essentially done by a year. Large breeds keep filling out until about eighteen months, and giant breeds can take two years — they stop growing taller well before they stop putting on mass across the chest and shoulders.

Can I tell adult size from paw size?

Not reliably. Big paws on a young puppy do suggest more growth to come, and it is a real signal in the sense that large-breed puppies grow into their feet — but it is qualitative. Weight against age, compared with a growth curve for the right size class, is far more informative.

My puppy is above the estimate. Is that a problem?

Not on its own — individual dogs vary and the estimate is a mid-point. What matters more is body condition: you should be able to feel your puppy’s ribs easily under a thin layer, and see a waist from above. Overfeeding a large-breed puppy to grow faster is actively harmful and raises the risk of developmental joint disease. Ask your vet if you are unsure.

What if I do not know the breed?

Pick the size class that matches what you expect the adult dog to be, based on the parents if you have seen them. If you have no idea, our photo breed identifier will suggest which breeds your puppy resembles, and each breed profile lists its adult weight range.
