One dog, whole body

Head, legs and tail all in the frame. A side-on standing shot tells us the most.

Good light, no filters

Coat colour and texture are big clues, and filters and dim rooms hide them.

Fill the frame

A dog in the distance is a dog we can't read. Get close enough to see the ears and muzzle.

Adult dogs work best

Puppies haven't grown into their breed yet, so expect a softer, less certain answer.

A photo is not a DNA test

We match what your dog looks like. That's genuinely useful — it tells you which breed profiles to read for grooming, exercise and temperament — but appearance and ancestry are different things. A Labrador mix can look like a pointer; two littermates can look like different breeds. When the result says "mix", read it as "looks like a mix of", and if you need your dog's genetics, a canine DNA test is the only reliable way.

  • 1Your browser shrinks the photo and strips its metadata, including location.
  • 2An AI vision model compares your dog's coat, ears, muzzle and build with the 201 breeds we cover.
  • 3You get the closest breeds, what pointed to each, and a link to every profile. The photo is then discarded.

Questions

How accurate is the dog breed identifier?

It is a best guess from appearance, and it is most reliable on a clear photo of a purebred dog. In our own testing on clear photos of known breeds, the right breed was among the results about three times in four. Mixed breeds, puppies, unusual angles and breeds that closely resemble each other are harder, which is why it shows several likely breeds rather than a single answer.

Can a photo tell me my dog's real breed mix?

No. The percentages describe how strongly your dog's look points to each breed, not its ancestry. Two dogs with very different family trees can look alike, and a mix often looks nothing like either parent. If you need to know your dog's genetics, a canine DNA test is the only reliable way.

Is my photo stored?

No. Your photo is resized in your browser, sent once to be analysed, and not saved anywhere afterwards. Resizing also strips the hidden metadata phones attach to photos, including location. The shareable result image is created on your own device.

What kind of photo works best?

One dog, in good light, filling most of the frame, with the head and body both visible — a side-on standing shot is ideal. Avoid heavy filters, costumes, and photos where the dog is far away or partly hidden.

Why isn't my dog's breed in the results?

The identifier chooses from the 201 breeds we have profiled. If your dog belongs to a breed we do not cover yet, you will see the closest lookalikes instead, usually with lower confidence.

Does it work for cats?

Not yet. It identifies dogs only. If you upload a photo without a dog in it, it will tell you rather than guess.

Is it free?

Yes, with no signup. To keep it that way there is a limit of a few photos per hour for each person.
